Ms. Roebuck's
First Grade Class
PHILOSOPHY
Welcome to the 2011-2012 School Year. In my first grade classroom I believe it is very important to create a safe and welcoming environment. As the children begin to explore their own gifts and talents they will be taught to respect the gifts and talents of others. First graders are still finding their way in the world of education. It is my job to create a non-threatening environment that will foster learning for all different abilities and academic needs.
CURRICULUM INFORMATION
All first grade curriculum is taught with emphasis on Reading and Language Arts. A variety of methods is used. Role playing, use of manipulatives, creative games, small group instruction as well as some traditional style of teaching is incorporated in all the core areas throughout the day.
Physical education, Art, Computer, Music and Library are all part of our weekly schedule.
RELIGION
It is February and we are currently working on the Call of the Apostles. and some of the miracles Jesus performed. We recognize that Jesus also calls us to be His followers and to show care and concern for the poor and the suffering. We will soon be preparing to enter the season of Lent. I don't stress as much "giving up things for Lent" as I do, "changing a behavior." (ex.) Go to bed when told and not give mom or dad a hard time.
READING/LANG. ARTS
We have begun working on the long vowels and some of the consonant clusters. We are continuing to work on nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Proper use of capital letters and end marks is being stressed as we practice sentence writing.
MATH
Everyone should be able to count to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's. We are working on identifying odd and even numbers and adding and subtracting 2 to/from a number. We are learning to tell time to the hour and half hour. When the children work on story/word problems, they not only have to solve the problem but they have to be able to explain verbally how they did it.
LITURGIES
We attend mass every Thursday at 1:45p.m. Each class takes a turn preparing the mass. The class that prepares takes an active part by reading and bringing up the gifts. Our first grade masses are on March 1st. and May 10th.
