Title I Reading

Welcome to Title I Reading. This is the website at Ambrose Catholic Academy. My name is Mr. Garfinkel and I am the Title I Reading Teacher. I work with all grades as needed.
Title I Reading. The goal of our program is to help children become better readers and writers. Due to the fact that we work with small groups of children we are able to focus on skills and remediation that will be of great benefit to the children. Regardless of the level that a child is at we strive to have he or she at his or her appropriate reading level by the end of their school year. For instance, a second grader should be at or near 3rd grade level by the end of the year. Comprehension, cause and effect, main idea, and sequence, are stressed in reading. Complete sentences, proper sentence structure, spelling, punctuation, and neatness will be stressed in writiing. Teaching is always done with a positive, nurturing, and compassonate approach. It is stressed to children that our main goal in Title Reading is to help them as much as we can. Even though children may be slighty below grade level we strive to work at the grade level they are at; working with each indiviual child as closely as we can to bring them up to grade level. Vocabulary at each level is constantly gone over. Students must identify the words on flash cards, give the meanings, and use them in sentences, and are often used in a game situation.
Materials Used: Books that have high interest stories are used to meet our goals that are stated above. Questions are asked that will make children think and arrive at realistic conclusions. Being a professional writer and author or two books I often use materials that I have made up, such as stories and worksheets. I am especially proud of papers that the children have written such as If I were President or A Teacher That I Admire. Childrens' work is displayed and their papers are virtuallly error free and interesting after doing practice and final copy with the proper editing.
